The new movie is based on the now-proven premise that Americans believe criminals and psychotics have a right to own weapons, including assault rifles which are the deadly human killers descended from the highly-effective Sturmgewehr 44 developed in Germany for infantry firefights in World War II.
Central to the story is a cadre of criminals who believe they can harness the Psycho Killa Militia to further their own plans or, at a minimum, kill all the people they believe unjustly put them in jail the last time. Since they believe all of American society is guilty in this regard, this puts hundreds of millions of people in immediate threat for their lives.
The PKM has no trouble building their militia to an enormous size despite FBI monitoring as the reports from the FBI field agents go to the central office where they disappear in the bureaucracy and no-one ever sees them.
As it grows, the PKM encounters other militias but they offer relatively little serious resistance as almost all of them are the same: they're comprised of men who like to play with guns and have sex with each other while dreaming of installing a right-wing dictatorship to defend the Constitution. They have no ability to defend themselves against the PKM as most of them are as dumb as a box of rocks and they're crazy too but they can't match the clinical psychoses that run rampant through the PKM.
Rumors begin spreading that the PKM will not only vanquish the country's right-wing militias but they also eat the dead. Since a good many of the rumors are true, terror spreads faster than an Australian bush fire and the PKM finds it's easy to take control of entire towns, villages, and, finally, cities. By the time Washington learns of what is happening, most of the Red States are already under PKM control and all the weapons and military vehicles in the various armories within those states have been seized.
Mister Passionfruit, the criminal mastermind and military strategist for the PKM, has two primary objectives: kill a whole lot of people and play a whole lot of surf rock. He operates under the same theory as the American banks: if I destroy everything then whatever is left is mine.
Of course we don't want to write a spoiler to let you know the outcome of the movie, you will have to watch it for yourself to discover what happens but there isn't much serious opposition from the U.S. Army as they haven't faced a serious battlefield opponent since Vietnam and the generals aren't concerned with much of anything except their latest affairs with hot CNN reporters. Petraeus makes a cameo appearance in which he just walks around in circles, muttering to himself, "They said they would make me President," over and over.
