There is yet another malicious idiot in the news as someone sent a letter to Congress and it had been poisoned with ricin, one of the deadliest chemicals around. The poison was detected before it got anywhere near Congress but that doesn't say anything about the people who came in contact with it while it was being transported. (CNN: Envelope tests positive for Ricin at Washington mail facility)
I've run into concern among friends that this could be part of a larger conspiracy but the idiot who did this didn't have the brain of a grapefruit or he never would have tried it in the first place. Mechanisms were put in place to intercept this sort of malevolence after the anthrax letters of some years ago. The person who sent it might as well have gone to a cop station and said, "I'm a terrorist. Please arrest me and put me in jail so I can be gang-raped by over-muscled thugs."
In my view, the chance of conspiracy is close to zero.
According to the article, police already have a suspect.
CNN, ever the helpful tool of the curious, even gives you leads on how to make ricin yourself. How this constitutes news is baffling.
