Results of the Great Greek WiFi Test

There had been some hope that hard-wiring the computer to the switch would give a faster Internet connection and logically it should.  Cutting straight to the result I will tell you it was a total fail.

The download speed varies between 1.7 Mb and 1.8 Mb which is about fifteen times slower than anywhere else in the Universe.  There is no chance of ever streaming audio from here on this line.

The Internet signal goes through a four-port switch to a router that provides WiFi support.  The switch could not be failing or the signal would never get to the router and WiFi would not work.  The problem could not be the cable I was using as I tried three of them.

That there is no improvement it all over WiFi speed in the hard-wired connection makes no sense as logically it should be faster but there was no significant difference.

An alternative is satellite Internet but it is expensive and requires a contract, either one of which stops the show immediately.

This was not a loss.  As Edison said, every experiment that fails educates you in how not to do it.  There is a way that will work, I just haven't found it yet.
