Vinyl will come back ... really. So will Robert E Lee and free Cracker Jack for kids at ball games.
Rather than getting wistful about eight-track tape players, maybe it would be good to give some thought to devising a recording process analogous to that which was used for vinyl and using some other substrate to record it. Think Star Trek memory cubes or some such.
