The Chaplain's Story

It's a runaway train,
  the lonely chaplain cried.
He told the boys not to fight
He couldn't stand it when they died.

But they told him to be quiet
That's not the Army way.
You will help them to the battle
  or you won't speak today

Tell them all they fight for Jesus
and lead them in a prayer
Their lives may be over
but they must know that we still care

Tell them they fight for Jesus
They must know that we still care
We still care, we still care,
we still care, we still care

The chaplain read his Bible
Thou shalt not kill was right there
He could not tell the men to fight
and they were right to fear

If there's punishment in Heaven
for the way we act on Earth
Asking men to fight for Jesus
  insults He of sacred birth

Every time there comes a battle
  whether football or a war
The coach says God is with you
He will help you with the score

The chaplain read his Bible
Thou shalt not kill is what he read
He couldn't send a man to battle
and put a gun to his head

The Army said that he was crazy
How could he do this thing
Clean him up and send him home
We have some hymns to sing
