"War Child" (poem)

They went out to the field
They'd been told not to go
but like any children
they really had to know
No-one saw to stop them
but they knew where they went
They didn't have to hear them
and they knew what that meant

The kids were just playing
it was such a lovely place
The sun was shining brightly
so blessed with God's good grace
They had a little ball
and they hit it with a stick
until one took a step
and thought he heard a click

War child
your life is not your own
your family is in shambles
in the wisdom from the throne
War child
the sun is now all gone
it won't rise next morning
you leave this life alone

In a moment it was over
there was just a flash of light
and then a noise stupendous
that nothing could set right
The children ran to help him
but it was much too late
There was nothing they could do
he already met his fate

War child
you don't deserve this thing
the horror that they visit
as they claim to bring the peace
War child
your life was never yours
the ones who came to do this
don't care for your release.

War child
the fighters have gone home
they left behind their weapons
and went back to their mothers
War child
you meet this fate alone
there's no-one there beside you
until they take another
