Macular degeneration is what blinded my mother and it's a heartbreaking affliction as, in most cases, there is no way to stop it. The disease takes out your vision in small bites in which the darkness slowly grows until finally you can see nothing at all. The risk of being afflicted by this disease is doubled by smoking cigarettes. (BBC: Smokers Blindness risk 'doubled')
For all the non-science (pronounced nonsense) on Facebook, I have never seen any mention of this even though the increased risk to smokers is based on hard science (i.e. scientists did a work-up rather than some idiot proclaiming the scientific truth on a Web page).
They also don't tell you that the risk of lung cancer is relatively low unless you have a genetic predisposition toward it but the risk of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) is 100% and this is a substantial reduction in your ability to breathe. However, quitting smoking can mitigate the symptons of this somewhat. There is a somewhat lower risk of emphysema which is also a substantial reduction in breathing ability but the difference is that emphysema cannot be stopped and this is what killed Circe Broom.
