Sonya Jevette Sings "Hotel California" at Cat's Art MusikCircus

"Hotel California" is a song I have ridiculed over and over as it is to me the most classic example of lazy performers knocking off old hits for people whose most exciting moment is completing the digestion of the evening's meal.  However, I had never heard Sonya Jevette sing it as she did last night at Cat Boucher's Art MusikCircus.  Sonya has a great gift for taking a cover song and making it her own.  This does not mean in any way that she steals a song but rather it's respectful to the original artist to present your interpretation of a song.  Sonya has an extraordinary voice and she paid great respect to "Hotel California" last night.

Sonya Jevette does a number of covers in her set with Adele being a particular favorite.  Again it's Sonya's voice and phrasing that sets her rendition apart.  Even though these are cover songs, she sings them the way she likes and her taste on that is excellent.  I was never much of a fan of Adele either ... until I heard Sonya singing some of her songs.

The cover songs are really good but Sonya really shakes it out when she does her originals and no week is complete without the "Big Girls" song.  Shake it like a salt shaker, baby!

From left to right there's Medora Chevalier, Kaia Shippe, and Sonya Jevette.  (You may notice Kaia has no hair and that's because of a browser bug.  I apoligised to her about that and she said it was ok to use it anyway.)

You may also notice that Medora is big girl and who knows if she really is or she isn't as the point of the song is that it doesn't matter.  What does matter is to treat her right or you ain't goin' to get none tonight!  The bigger the cushion, the better the wobbly, wobbly, babyyyyyy!

You may also notice that Medora is blowing bubbles with her gum and that's cool as it's all part of the song.

I had not met Kaia Shippe previously and would like now to welcome her to the MusikCircus.  We do this every week and we will look forward to seeing you again, hopefully your hair as well!  Thanks for being so understanding.

And Cat and I danced:

If my ol' Daddy could see me now!  Son, where did you learn those moves!
