In large part, ISIS can thank the West for fueling its membership. A huge part of the draw for young people is the purity of their version of Islam. It's regarded by other Muslims as an impure version but ISIS has been successful in portraying themselves as the true keepers of the faith and they adhere to it strictly. It's the same old Charlie Manson method: it may be crazy but at least it's consistent.
While America struggles with fake religion around pizza store owners, young people look for a real one and they see ISIS which, despite obvious problems, has the purity of belief that Western religion lacks.
Young people see the disingenuous hogwash coming out of Fox News, politicians, military, etc and of course they reject it. Only the weakest can be turned into stormtroopers. The others revolt and look elsewhere.
If you want to keep young people from joining ISIS, there's one simple way to do it: show them some respect and insulting their intelligence with Fox News is an exceptionally poor way to do it. It's only old fuckers who believe that ridiculous bullshit. Hipsters run from it.
America is probably the most disrespectful as any kid knows he will be punished by a lifetime of debt in college loans if he seeks an education but he doesn't have a sugar daddy to pay for them. If you want to make a kid feel absolutely hopeless, tell him he has to go to school when there's no way he can pay for it.
There's frequently mention of a War on the Church but it would be pointless as the only faiths in the West which are not collapsing are Judaism and Catholicism, both of which have held roughly the same percentage of the population for decades. If you bought stock in Protestantism in the forties then you're living in the gutter now as that one caved altogether and became a giant philosophical sinkhole. Protestants were about 70% of the population in the forties and are not much over 30% now.
You can see the reason in so-called preachers such as Jimmy Swaggart, Mike Huckabee, Pat Robertson, Creflo Dollar, etc, etc. All of them are in it for the money and most them are or have been political wannabes. When you have second-raters like these providing the spiritual guidance for millions, it's not clear why anyone thinks religion in America will survive.
I had no personal use for Billy Graham but he was a man of principle. I wouldn't for a moment include cheap imitations like Huckabee, etc in that category. In fact, just now I don't think there's anyone in that category except Pope Francis but he doesn't swing quite the same way.
It seems to me that not only has the quality of politicians declined enormously but so has the quality of preachers except, apparently, for priests and rabbis. The fact that both require extensive training is probably a large part of that whereas a Protestant can become a preacher if he decides preaching will make more money than selling cars.
If you're wondering why kids join ISIS, maybe you shouldn't have lied to them so much. More accurately, maybe Washington and London shouldn't have lied to them so much.
