A million people came into East Berlin and it was clear they could no longer be stopped. So came down the Wall.
Spreewald is in what was once communist East Germany but look at it now. Wiki: Spreewald (English)
The really extraordinary thing about the Spreewald is that people live there. A house is available right now for €80,000 which would be roughly $100K. And that's for five bedrooms. I can't even buy a sleeping bag, much less a house, but it's interesting to me to find such a beautiful place with people living there and keeping it that way and it's about 60-80 kilometers from Berlin with its ultra sophistication. That seems a grand combination to me.
