But he got it right on "American Sniper" (Daily Mail: 'He's a psychopath patriot': Bill Maher blasts American Sniper Chris Kyle and says film is successful because it's simplistic)
There's no reason to flog it as I've written on it previously but the accusation of state sponsorship is based on a simple logic flow:
If what the sniper did was heroic
then
it was valid for Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld to send him to do it
so
the war was justified
because
Iraq and Hussein were somehow responsible for 9/11 (and Iraqis are savages)
therefore
Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld are not war criminals.
NO SALE.
The movie is a whitewash and the only real thing in it was the fake baby as a symbol for the falsity of the rest of it.

I think what you are missing is that it was an anti-war movie. It showed the effects that war has on our soldiers--and their families. The last scene pulls it all together..he's trying to help the vet and the vet he's trying to help-- shoots him (they were both suffering from PTSD . Well thats my take on it...ML
If that was his intention, he missed it by a country mile. I've seen multiple quotes from viewers who said the movie made them want to go over there to kill more Iraqis.
