See the following article about the difference between crazy and stupid. This one confines itself to stupidity, my own.
Auto-update was not disabled for the laptop and now OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 will load the next time it restarts. We've seen already what it did to the new used machine as now it's dead on the ground. It can be fixed; Apple just reamed it with a software chainsaw.
There are two choices: the first is to let the update proceed for the sake of the diagnostic. However, not all bugs manifest on all machines so the information would be useful to Apple but of no value whatsoever to me. Moreover, Final Cut 10.2 will load after it sees Yosemite 10.10.3 is present and then the machine is completely screwed. (I have no reason to believe Final Cut 10.2 is broken as my thinking it's a victim rather than a perp. Yosemite crashes without Final Cut isn't even running.)
The other option is don't restart it. Apple machines, so long as they don't have OS X 10.10.3 on them, will stay up for quite long periods. It is a viable option to leave this machine in the current state while the new used machine goes off to, I guess, the Apple Store for their diagnostics. That looks like the most (cough) conservative approach to the situation and is likely how it will proceed.
So, nah, this one isn't too funny but coolness, apart from barking looneys, generally prevails. Only coolness will solve this as my dream machine, tiny li'l iMac though she may be, is stabbed in the heart and the rescue won't be dramatic as those kinds of solutions almost invariably make things worse. When it gets this bad the best thing you can do for yourself is slow down. So, it's slow.
