Need to Get a Shitload More Selfish

Giving things away wasn't a bad idea because I did it and, thus, it could not have been a bad idea except I also crashed my Harley into a car and that was specifically a very bad idea so it's clear the capability for bad ideas exists but giving things away wasn't one of them.

In many ways doing that defined Silas Scarborough as prior to that I'm Alan Fraser, the brilliant but troubled programmer.  I seriously was described that way and I thought, 'dunno about brilliant but I do know my only trouble is the world is not troubled over things which really are troubles (e.g. killing people).'

Silas is defined, he has become.  He never thought he had before as there was still bullshit to strip away.

Dream Big, It Just Might Happen

This hit the ground like the latest DARPA genius weapon but the proposal was to try to stage another show in Cincinnati.  It may not have been clear enough I'm not asking anything of anyone but whether the idea sucks gas (i.e. methane ... from a cow).

If it were possible to build the funds for such a show, then what is your judgment on the probability of success and humoring me is an exceptionally bad idea because this is the legendary Put All on 35 and Spin the Wheel.

(Ed:  what legend?)

I made it up.  There comes a time in life when you have to put it all on 35 and spin the wheel.  Live or die, you need to make the move.  It's not terrifying, it's exciting, hugely exciting.  Why do you think people play roulette.  The last time it happened is what made the legend.

(Ed:  what happened?)

No idea.  Want me to make up something?

Since I wrote the previous, I've spoken with Cat and she knows the Bigger Dream as she knows there's always a bigger one but it's really bigger than that.  At first I thought it would be best to keep this secret but there's not really a reason to do that.  The biggest reason for doing nothing is it's easily possible I could make the thing so complicated that it makes one killin' cool show but I still come out of it screwed (by myself).

Dream Big, It Just Might Happen - the Mechanics of It

Plan "A" - Silas Scarborough plays the 20th Century Theater in Cincinnati.  It's a benefit show and he's playing it solo

Plan "B" (nothing but VAPOR at this time) - The venue is the 20th Century and I've listed all the specific 'knowns' about the place with Cat for the reasons this is the place it must be.

This is how Dream Big, It Just Happen works:

How about if Sonya Jevette opens the show

Silas Scarborough does a set

How about Voodoo Shilton and FunkyFreddy Republic

How about Option Y

Those familiar with these acts already will likely see the flow of this.  I have no interest in ego, only in what creates a musical, spiritual flow through the evening.

Sonya brings us into it with her extraordinarily beautiful voice and she wears that cowboy hat while she plays a huge Gibson ES-335.  Her set is a touch of pop with R&B / Blues all through it and a serious taste of Texas attitude driving it all.

Silas Scarborough brings out some attitude of a different kind.  It's cranked harder and more extreme but he talks to the same Necromancer and I don't hurt no one, I swear it.  (From "There Will Come a Time")

Voodoo Shilton and FunkyFreddy Republic bring a whole different kind of attitude yet again and in a whole different style.  This is non-shredder guitar mastery in that they play super fast but they're not fuckin' around.  There's melody and meaning through it all.

Option Y comes to make sure everything is as twisted as they can possibly get it.  The style is, in easiest description, prog rock and they are exceptional at it.  Moreover, they are not derivative with it.

Tactical aspects

Sonya Jevette is in Dallas or Austin (i.e. transportation is a bitch).  She can't do this on any thinking 'the exposure will be great' as exposure don't pay the rent.

Silas Scarborough is also in Texas and will go up with the kit in a truck with co-driver Yevette who probably won't drive much.

Obvious idea #1:  drive up together.  Now it's a road trip and it's fun ... or a complete nightmare.  You know how it goes with road trips.

Mystery Lady is in Cincinnati

Voodoo Shilton is somewhere in southern New England.  FunkyFreddy Republic is somewhere in up-state New York.

Option Y is in Rhode Island.

Ninety-nine percent of success is showing up so how do we get them there.  I have no idea of the background circumstances of Voodoo, FunkyFreddy, and Option Y as to ease or difficulty of getting there.

Musical considerations

This would be a bitch to try cold but that would be so rockin' cool to see and hear the Mystery Lady singing with Sonya Jevette.  Think of it with two blues ladies going all Aretha with each other and they're way past ego combat because it's like Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman" when he said, "I've been around, you know."

Maybe I could play a little guitar for that but I tell you straight-up I'd be chicken going into it with the thinking, man, I hope I don't fuck up.

As to jamming beyond that, probably not.  I want Silas Scarborough to make his final definition.  This is what he is / was and that would be satisfying to me.  Whether people like him or not is for them to decide but at least it's from an accurate base.

As to playing on-stage if you haven't done it before.  I've played this place by myself previously.  You can do this.

Capacity is about four hundred and it has a balcony.  This place is so whackin' cool.

If you take nothing else from anything else I ever wrote, remember this:  dream big and it just might happen but one thing is absolute.  If you don't then it fuckin' never will.  My biggest regret is I did not dream bigger.  Never hold back on your dreams in any way.

Venue Requirements

Internet access from the 20th Century was more than adequate to stream to Second Life while also logged into it from multiple accounts.  Broadcasting video should also be possible but I did not try that previously.

The 20th Century P.A. is more than adequate for anything short of a metal band.  Audio outs can go direct to the P.A. and, whammo, you are wired for sound.  I do not use any amplifiers, here or anywhere else, except for the final stage P.A.  For this show, I don't even need to bring one.

The stage is broad but not hugely deep.  It's easily sufficient but don't be thinking Rolling Stones.  It's a cool stage, tho, and there's an unusual space a few feet above and behind it.   There could be something happening in there and I haven't come up with anything previously but it's worth a thought.

There is a Green Room which is pretty cool but I didn't use it.  When you're running a show and playing in it, you will never get near the Green Room.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The above is the Dream Date for the Dream Big, It Just Might Happen thinking.  Nothing has been reviewed with anyone except Cat who of course loved the idea because she loves every one of them.

The determination may be made it is better not to try to do this and that could be true for a million reasons, some huge and some of which just suck but we need to roll with them.

There is no bias toward performers from Cat's Art MusikCircus as my only interest is can you blow me away.  It's the final judgment of any music as did it or didn't it.  If it didn't then you don't remember because you already forgot about it.

All of the above have a formal Silas Scarborough Blow-Away Guarantee except for Silas Scarborough who hopes to blow you away but doesn't know if it will happen.  He thinks if he can give you a real Silas Scarborough show then he will do it.

Any of the Second Life jams could be done this way but they don't think big.  Typically they're staged in recreation rooms in hotels which have the worst audio and acoustics of any physical structure ever built.  That makes for convenience in staying but horror in sound.  This approach is the other way around as the objective is excellence in sound and acoustics because people are smart enough to figure out for themselves where to stay.  Cincinnati has more hotel rooms than Las Vegas has hookers.  It's not exactly a formidable challenge to find a room.

Timing

The show will run from 7PM or 8PM on a Saturday night and will run to 1AM+.  That should make for a good flow and good time to do it assuming there is adequate time for sound testing which I expect would being in the early afternoon.

Note:  keep in mind this will kill it for Euros.  An alternative approach is to start at 1PM or 2PM but keep in mind how that goes for setup and sound check which will get crunched hard.

In programming, they call this 'smoke testing' and it will be literal in part of this as I need smoke for the lasers and I can't use a fogger due to fire regulations.  There needs to be a haze machine instead and I don't have one.  That needs to be resolved as lasers are mandatory if this is to be full-out Silas.  Some of you have seen the videos ... it's mandatory.

Proposal to GoFundMe

Fund the gig including compensation and transportation for the people attending.  This is where charities often go out the window is they have so much fun spending the money on making more money that the people who were supposed to get the money never see it.  March of Dimes is a classic for this as only about 10%, if even that much, ever gets to the beneficiaries intended.

This is specifically a charity to Save Silas' Ass.  However, no one person should bear the brunt of doing that.  Therefore performers should be reasonably compensated and it should not eat their lunches getting there.

This can be reviewed further before I do anything, assuming I do anything.  Any discussion of fair compensation is necessarily private but it will also be necessary to make the aggregate public as part of the funding for the project overall.  There is no negotiation on compensation as my only question is of requirements.  The DB2 (Dream Big #2) show response is binary insofar as we can afford that or not.  Some parts of dreams are necessarily real as, amazingly, musicians do need to eat.

Silas needs to come out of this with up to five grand to get some fookin' teeth and a couple of grand to make life not suck for a little while.

Required Information So You Get It This is the Last One

There's been increasing numbness in my right arm.  It's variable as it comes and goes but it comes more often and there's no good explanation for why.  That shoulder has hit the ground just as often as the left and the only difference is it didn't break as much.

There's a similar situation with the left as that's the one which was smashed but the shoulder replacement is not forever.  Lifting a twelve-pack of Pepsi is painful.

There's a lot more than that but my intention is to show purpose rather than elicit sympathy.  If I don't do it soon then it's likely I never can.

This is the One Shot and it's almost a relief if the thinking is to bugger off with it as it's much, much easier.

Self-Pity

If you're reading self-pity in this then you didn't understand a word of it.  At this stage, death is not a fear but a reason to motivate as soon enough you will motivate no more.  People waste so much time being afraid of it.

Carter is my huge inspiration and I don't see him whining.  He states the facts and gets on it.  Yes, sir!

There is no death sentence but enough stuff is busted that you know it's coming and the only thinking is yeah, I get that, but if you could hold it off just a bit, there's still some stuff I need to do yet.

This needs to be stated as Cat can hear my voice and she knows there is no melodrama.  The only question is survival and what's the best way to do that.

Legal

No-one owns your music but you and, thus, no-one has a right to the audio or video masters other than the performer(s) in them.  Making a DVD and trying to sell it is potentially the way to fuck up some beautiful friendships and, frankly, I don't want to risk it.  Prior to doing that it's necessary to determine how any profits will be divided and that's where lawyers get into it and start stabbing people.  Very bad.

Conversely, neither I nor 20th Century own the content simply by virtue of staging the show.  None of what is recorded, unless I'm in it, will be released to YouTube or anywhere else as it's not my property to sell.

This compromises in no way my belief in socialism as fair compensation is all part of to each according to his needs.  The fairness aspect is what capitalists fucked-up.  The concept without that is perfect and why would anyone except the greedy want it any other way.

(Ed:  freedom is a fair deal?)

Righty, right, matey.  Maybe you are learning something.
