The reason for taking the laptop to the Apple Store is a DVD has been stuck in it for about six months. Lately it has been hanging more and more. Today it stopped launching anything. That's a deceased laptop.
There is an appt tomorrow to at least get the DVD out to see if that makes any difference at all. If not then the music is deceased as there is no way of driving it from this computer. Putting any serious money into fixing it, even if I had it, would be a waste. There is no chance of video on this one anyway as it is even older than mine and can't run the software.
Everything that can be done is being done.
