Maybe you think Phoenix J is just fooling around with some toy but she really does have a red piano like that she uses for gigs. I believe she said she has a baby grand and that would be a bit of a chore for roadies (i.e. they will hate you) so she really does use a little red piano when she plays out.
There's really not a specific thing I would identify that was different about Phoenix' set tonight but she was 'on' and the audience was feeling it. She brings a lot of happiness and love and it felt like people maybe were feeling it more than usual. There was a lovely gentleness in the air and I'm sure everyone was feeling it and becoming part of it.
Vandengroef played his third set tonight and the first two had a few bumps but not this time. He started out smooth and kept the groove going through the whole set. I didn't detect any clipping and you bet I listen for it as I see it as part of hosting is to get the feedback to the performer because he or she may not know.
The fact that it worked is not enough to describe the show as he got the groove growing and it felt like he was becoming more and more comfortable with it as he went along. It started smooth and it stayed that way and from that I know, yep, Van has got the Circus stuff. Excellent groovulosity.
These aren't sets to describe but rather to feel. Phoenix and Van will be back in two weeks and hopefully you will have time to come to hear them play.
Part of the reason I write tonight is because Cat couldn't be there. She was really looking forward to it this morning so what that says to me is this: the cable guys came out to 'fix' something. The other reason is the evening was special from the excellent work both did in their sets and also in the overall continuity of the vibe. It was special and I hope some time you can come to hear it for yourself.
