The columns on the rear wall are from an American DJ Majestic. It lists for about $240 but is available from zZounds for $170 US.
The columns give a cool effect but it's not making me feel sexy like a jackrabbit. A second one would result in beams crossing each other and that would make for a much fuller effect. However, unlike the lasers, one or both would have to be moved if I change the viewpoint of the camera as otherwise the camera will not see them.
The absence of any red lasers is a problem for me and this is solved by a Shinp DL-22RR which has two 100 mW red lasers. For a red laser, 100 mW is plenty of power. This one is $129 US from AliExpress. They say free shipping and delivery in 4-7 days. Shinp is said to be a large manufacturer in China and reliability can be expected to be good. (I do not own one, that's what I have read.)
A huge advantage in this unit is the flexibility as the beams will be easily-seen regardless of which way I point the camera plus the red makes a substantive change to the quality of the image rather than simply making more of it.
A huge consideration on doing anything is that it will take months to do it and any change to the configuration of light fixtures will necessitate changes in the patches in the light controller. Nevertheless, the additions are required so that's the primary focus. I have no idea how I will pull it off but it's important to analyze what improves the display. It's not my intention to look like a live stage but to look better than one. This is about trippin', not about boxes of amplifiers and electronic gimcrackery all over the place. I hate electronics, I just need what they do.
"Erotica Psychotica" started as the name of the CD about which I mutter periodically. I was asked when will I do it but I don't believe anyone would buy it. The remixing of tunes for a CD will continue but if there's forty bucks available and there's a question of releasing a CD or getting lights, that will be Option Number Two every time. I believe in the lights. I don't believe in CDs. The only advantage is getting requested tunes to friends but that can happen anyway through the podcast. My first priority is to make the most kick-ass video I possibly can.
Note in dealing with Chinese equipment: one of the lasers has a dramatic notice on it that says AVOID EXPOSURE TO LASER BEAM. This notice is right next to the hole in the unit through which the laser beam emerges ... to burn your eyes into little puddles.
Note also on Chinese kit: verify the power supply as you want to know if the unit is driven by US or UK power. Understand this stuff or have fun getting adaptors at Radio Shack.
Note on DMX: you want it. Any light fixture without DMX intelligence isn't much more than a flashlight. Even if you don't use it right now, expect that you will.
