Pope Francis vs America and the Great Schism - Updated

Pope Francis has been throwing down the religious equivalent of fightings words on America just about every time he has spoken.  The latest from him on 'pagans in Christian name only' is sure to endear him to Americans even more as he addresses specifically America's consumerism.  It's only a few days ago he dumped an American Cardinal for trying to force his position on the Pope.  That's a-firin'.

There has been some annoyed but generally casual babbling about a schism with the Vatican and that's intriguing as the last time that happened you got Protestants.

The situation would be novel as most of the world's Catholics are almost certainly not in America.  There is animosity between American and the Vatican already so a formal schism would not likely be an amicable divorce.  What usually happens past that is the two populations end up hating each other.  Since Americans have so much money, there's another great reason for the Catholics outside with the Vatican to hate them.  That seems inevitable.

The schism isn't likely be more than talk as it would probably be fatal to American Catholicism, not from attack from anywhere else but rather it's not doing all that well anyway.

It's a bizarre phenomenon for me as I agree with practically everything the Pope says whereas a good many American Catholics want him out.

Update:  I have no idea how many 'a good many' may be but my perspective is based on discussion with a dedicated and knowledgeable Catholic who gave the impression his anger regarding the Vatican's position was not uncommon and could result in a schism.  I really don't pull this stuff out of the air ... mostly.
