General Martin Dempsey - Who Knew Desks Gave So Many Medals

General Martin Dempsey is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and I noticed he's got enough medals on him to look like he must have been the New Age Audie Murphy.

But then I reviewed what he has done.

Nothing.

Annual salary:  $250K plus perks.

Dempsey received a commission as an Armor officer upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1974.

Executive Officer of the 3rd Brigade 3rd Armored Division during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 4th Battalion of the 67th Armored Regiment "Bandits" from 1992–1995 in the 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Hesse, Germany.

Colonel he commanding the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment from 1996-1998 in Fort Carson, Colorado.

Between 1998 and 2003 - a period of 5 years, there is no documentation of service recorded.

Note:  he does nothing for five years and re-emerges promoted directly from bird Colonel to Major General.  What miracle is this (other than political patronage).

Major General Dempsey assumed command of 1st Armored Division.

Dempsey's command of the 1st Armored Division lasted until July 2005 and included 13 months in Iraq, from June 2003 to July 2004.  While in Iraq, 1st Armored Division, in addition to its own brigades, had operational command over the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment and a brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division.

He was award the POCF (Presiding Over a Cluster Fuck) medal twice for showing up in Iraq.  That accounts for two so how did he get so many medals his chest is covered with them.

Here's what he has been awarded:

Defense Distinguished Service Medal (2)   ---  Non-combat and means nothing
Army Distinguished Service Medal (4)  --- Apparently he showed up regularly for work
Defense Superior Service Medal  ---  For generals who don't do anything
Legion of Merit (3)  --- Also doesn't mean much
Bronze Star (2) with Valor  --- The only real medals in the rack and good luck finding what he actually did.
