They will never do worse than picking Obama on a Nobel Peace Prize. I imagine we agree on that much.
As to Malala, she's a sweet pick and she's been gutsy plus given some good speeches but I see her more as a symbol than someone who has paid the dues. I understand she got shot but that's not Nobel Prize work, that's living in a bullshit world stuff. What she has done after puts her in-class but I really don't think there's enough of it and the Committee's pick is not that brave.
Picking Pope Francis would have been a flat-hand slap of America's face for brazen materialism, blah, blah. That would have been a nervy pick but, as with Malala, he still doesn't have a big history. He's given some cool speeches and thrown out some massively-cool soundbites but, in my view, there needs to be more time-in-grade.
Edward Snowden is my other favorite as he could easily have taken a bullet for what he did and he still may. That single action brought about a tremendous change in awareness, although with relatively little activity to rectify, a problem that runs far out of control. Picking him would also have been a brave move as America would have been burning over it.
There are others on the favorite list and one was a doctor who has worked very long years against disease in Africa. No question his dues are paid. And so on.
The kid is a safe pick, a sweet pick, but I don't think the best one.
