Mari Boine - A Study in Racism

While the virulent racism in the United States receives enormous press and rightly so, it is not the only form of racism in the world and Mari Boine Persen, a Laplander, has been on the brunt of it in her life in Norway where Laplanders are treated much like black people in the United States (WIKI:  Mari Boine)

Mari Boine took her frustration into music and the racist treatment of her people is a theme in some of her songs.  She has worked so hard in her craft that she has received the highest recognition in Norway that an artist can receive.  This would have been extremely hard to predict given her treatment as a child and young woman.

She has recorded many albums and her discography is listed in the WIKI linked above.

She has a beautiful voice and a beautiful style.  In this song she sings in the language of her people.

Here is an English translation of the lyrics:

Vuoi my little yellowbird
Vuoi my summernight bird
cuckoo and eagle
Vuoi my swallow
with nest under riverbanks
Vuoi nighttowl
with limitless vision
Vuoi vuoi me

Vuoi vuoi joy
with hearty laughter
Vuoi sorrow
with oceans of salty tears
Vuoi vuoi frost
winter and cold
Vuoi summer with burning hot days
Vuoi vuoi me
