Acoustic Guitars You Won't Want to Smash

"Animal House" showed us how to correctly dispose of acoustic guitars but some are definitely worth keeping and we heard some of them tonight at Cat Boucher's Art MusikCircus.  James Corachea played the first hour and Lefty Unplugged played the second.  It was an extraordinary evening!

James Corachea is not just striking the pose as a young man, he really is a young man!  (Check him out on YouTube)

I was listening intently to James as I wanted to be absolutely sure I reported accurately on the show.  What I heard tonight was a very confident performance and I asked him about that but he said he didn't feel as confident as I was hearing him.  That's fine as his delivery was excellent regardless of whether he really felt the confidence!

What I heard tonight was a sound that was deliberate and strong and was also delicate and beautiful.  There was some irony when he played an original song of his that he calls "Confidence" and he really does sound confident when he plays it.  The irony is what you saw above but that's cool as he sounds great.

(In case you don't care to dance during a show, there are many other ways to listen and the picture is Aneli Abeyante listening from the Moon)

There is a quite subtle complexity to what James plays and he does it without grandstanding.  Shredders, technicians, and New School guitarists in general just make my toes itch as there is no heart, no passion in what they play.  It's technically brilliant but boring as lawn maintenance.  They have played the piece a hundred times before and it shows.

While there is a very strong technical component to what James plays, he delivers it with extraordinary feeling and delicacy which is quite transporting.  Of particular fascination is how he delivers the harmonics.  Hopefully without getting too technical, every sound has harmonics but there is a specific harmonic sound one can achieve on a guitar by plucking a string just right but without touching the string to the fretboard.  It's a difficult technique to master and James is extremely good at it.

Lefty Unplugged played the second hour tonight and this was a great treat as usually he doesn't start this late.  His style and that of James complement each other very well and this makes the whole night a great treat indeed.

Some of Lefty's songs are quite dark and I found myself getting tremendously depressed.  What if everything is a lie.  What if nothing is real.  These are not tough things to believe as I have experienced that before and to quite devastating effect.  My experience does not at all show a fault in Lefty's music but rather it is a tribute to the power of what he sings.  Everyone hears something different in a real artist's songs.

Also, tragically, Lefty reported the apparent demise of Ho Chi Pidge, a bird that had become quite responsive to him.  However, he reports some progress with a number of sparrows.  It's not clear if music soothes these savage beasts but food will almost certainly work.

Something I missed last night is Lefty did not play any electric music but that also is part of the magic of his show and that of James as well as you really don't know before you get there what either one of them will do.

What made the set for me last night was when Lefty closed with "Because of You" as it is a very beautiful song.

And Cat and I danced

Because of you ... I can love
Because of you ... I am alive

Während so viele Dinge sind nicht real, Cat ist immer so.
