The Dream Time with Lefty Unplugged

In Australia, the aboriginal people speak of the Dream Time and the best a savage, unsophisticated moderner can do with this is that it's the time and space beyond all this, it was the beginning of all things and the end of all things.  And so it was that last night Lefty Unplugged started with something that sounded very much like a didgeridoo but how one gets a guitar to sound like a wind instrument is something you will have to ask him.  (Cultural note:  Aboriginal players don't like it when women play the didgeridoo and they consider it cultural theft when Westerners even touch one, particularly for New Age performances.  Fortunately, the last thing one would call a Lefty performance is New Age!)

If it looks to you like Lefty Unplugged is in the Dream Time already, it may well be true as his insight into things is extraordinary and his gift for expressing them is marvelous as well.  While he's playing an electric guitar in the image, he has been playing acoustic guitars a lot lately even though he is quite excellent on electric.  He plays whichever instrument best delivers the sound he wants as he knows it's always the Dream Time at Cat's Art MusikCircus.

Lefty was a bit scattered last night as the change to Daylight Savings Time in the U.S., three weeks ahead of Europe, has bollixed performance schedules all over the place.  On March 31, it will blow them up all over again when Europe switches to Daylight Savings Time and comes back in-sync with the U.S.  Any scattering did not affect his play but rather he was a bit undecided about what he would play and that's another of the marvelous things about his act in that one never does what he will do from one week to the next.

It's pointless to rattle off titles as he won't do the same ones next week anyway but one that was particularly striking was "Somewhere in My Shell" as it showed a masterful use of a looper.  He was so smooth with it that one wouldn't really notice him kicking off loops unless he wanted you to notice.  Lefty does take requests so ask him for it sometime but don't expect him to play it exactly the same as he did last night as he doesn't simply memorise things.  The man can play!

It wasn't such a good Dream Time for Cat as she was having one hell of a time with an uncooperative Internet.  She has been plagued with intermittent troubles that started about the same time as mine and wrecked both of her shows this week-end.  Fortunately I could cover her for Lefty's show so it didn't need to be canceled but that still sucked for her as she was so looking forward to hearing him.

Cat did make it for the last song and we danced!

Oh, Daddy, where did I learn these steps!  (laughs)
