Researchers recently announced the discovery of telepathic ability in rats. In an experiment with rats at different locations, scientists connected electrodes to the brains of the rats and at one location the rats solved a problem to discover which lever to push to get water and this information was transmitted to the receiver rat at the other location. In the best of the tests, the transmissions were seventy percent accurate. (CNN: Do telepathic rats advent biological computers)
So, shall we review a moment: this ain't even fookin' close to telepathy! However, it's extremely close to The Matrix. Just take the red pill, honey.
There's all sorts of twisted sci-fi one could write based on this technology in which an over-mind plugs into his drone network of eunuch minds for additional 'horsepower' to solve some perplexing problem but in a world of such rampaging narcissism it doesn't seem there's even a faint chance that such a circumstance would ever arise. What possibility is that that anyone would volunteer or be induced to participate.
However, get super dark with it and consider the brain does not typically die before the heart. When your heart stops, the brain dies because of lack of oxygen, nutrients, etc. Assuming that supply is artificially continued, the brain should continue 'processing' indefinitely. This idea has been presented in multiple stories previously but there was never any particular reason to do it except for the sake of some lurid horror movie. Now there is a reason to create a 'dead pool' of subordinate minds as the 'owner' was going to die anyway.
Given the real possibility of electro-communication between a mastermind and its subordinates and a dead pool from which to harvest those subordinates, the biological network becomes a feasible. This throws any thought of ethics out the window but anyone defending ethics given the behavior of societies in the modern world is likely already soaking wet from that which blew back onto him on the wind.
Go forth to your typewriters and get thee writing something twisted!
So, here's a link to my version of "I Love Rats" and it will probably rot your brain also but least you won't have wires hanging out of it ... unless you have them already.
