Cat got an invitation to a concert earlier today so off we went to hear nnoiz Papp.
If you're guessing from the way nnoiz Papp looks that he doesn't play the same old stuff then you would be exactly right. He's an electronic musician who uses at least one synthesizer with his original tracks and possibly a looper as well. He is classically-trained but more for the purpose of teaching music than learning it but the classical influences are clear. At one point, junivers Stockholm remarked that it sounded 'Bach-ish' and it's true. While electronic music can sometimes be a bit sterile, nnoiz is highly-expressive and you feel it as much as appreciate it.
What Cat and I discovered in exploring the nnoiz was a series of wonderfully imaginative original compositions in music but nnoiz also composes in lights as, we believe, it was he who designed the particle displays that were making quite a magical spectacle during his performance.
The venue is Subzero Sound Congress and nnoiz Papp owns it. Owning a venue yourself may seem egotistical but it's not at all as it's a great way to play whenever you feel like it. I used to do it that way all the time and loved the freedom. You can see from his stage that this is not a venue for doing acoustic covers of Beatles songs!
Toko Loon helps nnoiz with his shows and she lives in Tokyo. nnoiz lives in Germany so it must be an interesting exercise for them to communicate with each other with so many time zones between them. Nevertheless, the show was well-handled and there were lots of people there enjoying it.

nnoiz Papp ranges from classical to funky and I asked for the German word for funky but the answer is ... well, funky (laughs). Similarly, the word for 'cool' in German is not kühl which actually does mean cool auf Deutsch but cool in music is ... well, cool! The hipsters used to love to use the German pronunciation but it wasn't all that hip as that's not what they say!
Something I've been learning more every day is that the stereotypes of Germans have been inaccurate to the point of absurdity. I knew it already with Cat but it's everywhere I look and I see it again in nnoiz's music. It's brilliant but gentle, imaginative without being lofty, and sweeps wide without ever thinking of pushing anything else out of the way. As he travels you can hear the influence of German composers but later you will hear Arabic and Oriental tones coming through his sound. His music is much more than simply a funky beat or repetition of classical work. It's a rich, wide-reaching sound and it takes you very much on a journey, the finest kind of concert!
