Yes, it is hideous but the much more significant aspect is that it hardly ever happens. News media will blow it up like the Queen Elizabeth sank and all the passengers were eaten by alligators but they have reasons beyond news for doing that.
Mothers are hammered with information like this as every stranger is a potential threat, you must protect your child. Danger can come from anywhere and you must be ever vigilant.
Mother definitely needs to be vigilant but she needs to be vigilant for the right things and strangers hardly ever harm children. The FBI compiled crime statistics from between 1980 and 2008 and, for all children murdered, only three percent of them were killed by strangers. There are two very important observations in the study. The first is that it is extremely unlikely a stranger will kill your children. The second is that three percent refers to the children who were killed and does not mean that three percent of all strangers are killers. It means hardly any of them are.
So many people want you to be afraid and not for good purpose but look closely at this, Mom. There is no need for your fear. I love kids and so does just about everyone. I don't particularly want to live with them but I like watching the goofy stuff they do. I like seeing them absolutely blown away when they discover something I forgot forty years ago. So does just about everyone ... except for a few old cranks but they won't hurt your kid either.
