The iMac is up and running although still with a box stock array of software loaded. Internet access has not crashed it although it needs to log some hours to believe that.
This makes the router the current Prime Suspect and it's a Netgear WNDR4300. That's a current router but the firmware is not as the first firmware upgrade with release notes is dated 12/7/14 so there's no chance that was applied and there are other firmware upgrades after that.
On balance, the same router did just fine with this iMac under Yosemite 10.10.2. Upgrading the firmware or getting a replacement router can be considered but still it remains that something in Yosemite 10.10.3 revealed the problem. Whether Apple considers that a bug really isn't important to me as I just need the machine to work.
Possible plan of attack is to download the firmware as a ZIP file to this computer and take that to Yevette's computer to upgrade the router as she can't get to the Internet with me connected to the modem and I can't get to the router for the same reason. She can get to the router, it just doesn't connect to anything else.
The problem that possibly comes is that upgrading the router may mean connectivity will be lost for Yevette's machine because it's a 2006 Mac Pro running seriously back-level software. The laptop is running Yosemite 10.10.2 and it's a 2012 machine so likely less exposure. The only way to get Yevette's machine to a more current version of OS X is to upgrade the processor chips and I plan to do that but the process turns grim and cold if it's in response to her machine now being the dead one.
Possibly that means getting another router as there won't be any backout once the router firmware is upgraded on the existing one. Therefore get another one so Yevette can recover by powering up the original router. That pongs the problem back to Apple and no-one likes pong.
Plenty of time to consider it as the Mac has to stay up continuously for hours before there will be belief it won't crash.
It does look like progress but it's still complicated to resolve.
Update:
Crashed again. Scratch off the router as Prime Suspect.
