This is going to confuse the living hell out of the Amerika über alles crowd as the Vatican Bank will report its financial dealings to 'American tax authorities' thus surrendering its most powerful instrument to the infidels. (The Guardian: Vatican bank agrees to open its books to US tax authorities)
GOP Catholics are endlessly amusing as the Vatican represents everything the GOP is not and at the most fundamental level because it's the supreme example of central authority. If you go against the Word, your ass is out and then you get Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Protestants in more flavors than Baskin Robbins ice cream, Christians hating or at least feeling superior to each other all over the place, and you'll see a union of those republics about the same time as the Pacific ices over and whales take up skating.
States' rights at the Vatican? (cough) Bullllllshit
The Protestants are arguably more GOP than Catholics because they split after a flurry of specious philosophy but centered on a tax revolt against the Vatican. The only other things separating them are some relatively-trivial philosophical differences. The comical part of the tax revolt is they rejected the Vatican's right to collect taxes but then each of them created their own power structures and now they pay taxes to them instead.
Republicans are confused about religion but Democrats even more so as they can't even make up their minds what they don't believe.
