Reagan Still Makes a Joke Out of the Law Even in Death

Trading dope and guns so he could get proxies to fight the Sandanistas wasn't enough for Reagan.  Making a national hero out of Oliver North wasn't enough even though Reagan managed to tarnish the White House and the Marine Corps with him and there's never been any evidence Oliver North had any professional capability beyond being a man with the ethics of a snake.  Of all the amoral pseudo-soldiers of the last fifty years, Oliver North was the one who would have been most suited to manage a Nazi death camp as his indifference to law, humanity, or any consideration beyond his own amusement and his own perverted view of patriotism were hallmarks of everything he did.

But it gets better.  Even in death Reagan can make a mockery of the law as there are still hordes of proles who think he was one step from Divinity.  All we really learn from this is they don't have much of a view of Divinity but so it goes.  They think he was the best President America has ever had.  From that we learn their view of American history is quite thin also.

James Brady was wounded when John Hinckley tried to assassinate Reagan.  He survived but at substantial physical expense as his motion wasn't so good and neither was his speech.  Nevertheless, he survived for thirty-three years and died yesterday.

Here's the beauty part:  the coroner is actually considering ruling his death a homicide such that Hinckley can be prosecuted for murder.  That Hinckley was locked in a booby hatch for most of those thirty-three years was not enough.  Now some idiot Republican somewhere wants to be a cowboy and thinks he can play this to make a name for himself.  Funny how that always comes by destroying something.

This is the same kind of mindless vindictiveness that justifies everything from burning witches to bombing the living hell out of Iraq for no particular reason.  Some of the neocons even today will swear the Iraq invasion was 'protecting America's vital and strategic interests' and all I can conclude from this thinking is such people have brains made of PVC pipe and Super Glue.  So, homeboy, you tell me what those strategic interests (cough) were and we will both have a nice day.

Another example is the endlessly stupid and vindictive persecution of Cuba and no doubt they say the purpose is this is also to protect America's strategic interests as well.  You saw how it was with those Mariel boat people.  Man, those Cubans are dangerous.

It might be better if officials gave at least some minimal thought to just how much damage they do to the perception of America by permitting this kind of gratuitous meanness.  It's all part of the generic narcissism that's been expanding faster and fatter than Google stock prices for years.  German Nazi officials will go down as the worst in history but it would be much better if American officials were not pursuing so diligently catching up with them.
