"Midnight in Montgomery" - Alan Jackson (video)

A friend asked about my taste in music but it's a tough pick.  "Hard Candy Christmas" isn't a schmaltzy throwaway to me because of the sound and also the time I saw the movie featuring it / the circumstance of the movie.  There was also a time drunk at a Cyndi Lauper concert and being a loud asshole so there's a nice helping of guilt as well.  (Rolling Stone:  Hear Cyndi Lauper Cover Dolly Parton's 'Hard Candy Christmas')

That will be extremely moving for me but so will Pink Floyd when they play at Pompeii.  For my own play, I want the fat distortion / big sustain sound from my guitar because that's most transporting for me.  I don't like the mechanistic sound of New School metal which strikes me as more algorithmic than musical.  There are algorithms in all music but the level to which that is transparent is all in the skill of the composer.

Maybe it seems cagey to say there are multiple tastes but what else really does it.  I like jazz so long as it's more toward bebop and blues rather than lounge jazz.  I like some country and love the Dixie Chicks.  Alan Jackson did one called "Midnight in Montgomery" way, way back and I love that one as well. This is more like maybe country blues / ballads rather than hayride country.  I like the Leningrad Cowboys and who knows how to describe a crazed electric band with an accordion, tubas, and the band still cranks.  The middle- to eastern-Europe music is compelling with the mix of instruments, etc, etc.

I really don't think it's cagey, I just can't give one answer.

Here's one of my answers, maybe one of the best country songs ever.

Lyrics for "Midnight in Montgomery"

Midnight in Montgomery, silver eagle, lonely road
I was on my way to Mobile for a big New Year's Eve show
I stopped for just a minute to see a friend outside of town
Put my collar up, I found his name, and felt the wind die down

Then a drunk man in a cowboy hat took me by surprise
Wearing shiny boots, a Nudi suit and haunting haunted eyes
He said 'Friend it's good to see you, it's nice to know you care'
Then the wind picked up and he was gone
Was he ever really there

'Cause it's midnight in Montgomery
Just hear that whipporwill
See the stars light up the purple sky
Feel that lonesome chill
Cause when the wind is right, you'll hear his songs
Smell whiskey in the air
Midnight in Montgomery
He's always singing there

Well, I climbed back on that eagle, took one last look around
Through red tail lights a shadow moved slow across the ground
And off somewhere a midnight train is slowly passing by
I could hear that whistle moaning
I'm so lonesome I could cry

'Cause it's midnight in Montgomery
Just hear that whipporwill
See the stars light up the purple sky
Feel that lonesome chill
Cause when the wind is right, you'll hear his songs
Smell whiskey in the air
Midnight in Montgomery
He's always singing there
He's always singing there
Oh Hank's always singing there
