Bagged By a Battery ... But Not Quite

There's been a stalk this evening for full boat shooting with lasers and smoke ... but ... the check list for doing it hit a snag since there's not enough battery left in the iPad.

The smoke really sucks so there's a bit of reluctance.  It doesn't suck while shooting the video but it's cold so all the windows are closed.  Best way to get the smoke out is by opening the front and back doors to let it blow through.  That's fine when it's 77F as it was yesterday but not so fine at 40F as it is now.

It looks like the answer is to blow some of the high-grade while the iPad percolates on charge.  The thing won't get to 100% before morning but that's not needed for the one song.

Maybe in about an hour, I'll start powering up devices and it takes fifteen minutes alone to get the smoke machine ready to go because its heater needs to get ready.  The lasers are furiously loud with all the damn fans and that's not a problem for recording because the only mike for this isn't set up in a way to be too vulnerable to them.  The cameras don't hear it because the music drowns it out.  Nevertheless, they're loud so screwing with them any longer than necessary isn't useful.

Since we (as in the journalistic I) are now diligently smoking the high-grade, there is one possible consequence of this course.  Maybe it gets cool just to screw with the patches for the lasers ... but ... then recording gets lost.

The lasers are programmable to draw all kinds of patterns on the wall but that aspect is irrelevant to me since my only interest is the pattern they draw in the air with the beams as they go through the smoke.  For example a beam traversing a horizontal plane is what gives the 'liquid air' effect in the smoke and it's one of the most beautiful things a laser can do.  The purpose in using multiple lasers is to get more than one doing that at once and in different colors.

Although the lasers seem high-technology, they're really kind of clunky.  The fan noise is obvious but they work by redirecting the beam with little mirrors which are controlled by servo motors and those make noises too.

Or maybe I only wait half an hour.  There was 17% in the iPad when I put it on the charger.  I want more buffer than that but it doesn't have to be a lot more.

I want to see what this looks like in the video.  Even if I chuck the result, it will clearly show the flow of it and that would be cool to see.

The video won't get chucked for costuming or anything of that nature.  If I do this right, you won't know or care what I'm wearing.  If the result comes out well and I don't come away with the thinking I should take another shot to do it substantively better then, hey, roll it out.

The Great God Mescalito is wandering about and sometimes says, hey, just fuckin' do it, man.

Maybe you wonder why this doesn't get like Cheech and Chong but a bowl of the high grade is enough reefer to cover my thumbnail.  It's maybe 20% of a joint rolled with the JOB 1.25 papers.  Regrettably, my lungs get less and less tolerant of the smoke and anything but the high-grade buries them almost immediately.  That's part of the reason for minimizing the smoke machine as well ... I don't want to breathe the crap.  It's harmless glycerine but I still don't want to breathe it.

Just checked with Yevette and she's fine if I smoke out the place.  Hmm ... it's been about half an hour.

Doing this is like NASA.  Starting down the checklist ...

camera batteries - all three cameras check out

looper is set to the right phrase this time

lasers are all aimed

synth has the Duo Trumpet voice

guitar volume dropped on the mixer to prevent drowning the loop

smoke machine is powered-up and needs fifteen minutes

lasers will wait until just before launching because they make such a racket

guitar will be tuned right before starting

Looks like T-15 and holding for the smoke machine.  We shall see what happens here.

How about some incense for complete tripsicallity.

(Ed:  is that a word?)

Well, it uses letters.
