Mystery Lady first discovered "Loving Vincent" but, with her witchy powers, of course she did. I've never known another human more sensitive to graphic art, most of all painted, and it's been a privilege to feel that with her.
The movie has been released and is in some stage of that process of that now. This isn't the type of movie which would normally become a boomer at the box offce but wouldn't it be a kick if this one did.
Maybe some of you old freaks remember Ralph Bakshi with his animation via Rotoscope in the 60s. Walt Disney is the original animation master, of course, but Bakshi did some remarkable and highly-twisted animation.
"Loving Disney" gives a new type of animation although likely it's the hardest to create since every frame for the movie is painted in van Gogh's style. I think the big win is when a movie is boffo at the box office so I hope they really do achieve that.
The movie was only released in the last days and here's a critic's view of it. (Huffington Post: “Loving Vincent” — Interview With Directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman)
Loving Vincent is a 2017 biographical animated drama film about the life of painter Vincent van Gogh. It is the first fully painted animated film. It is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, and is being produced by Hugh Welchman and Sean Bobbitt of BreakThru Films and Ivan Mactaggart of Trademark Films. The development was funded by the Polish Film Institute, and re-training of professional oil painters to become painting-animators on the film was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign. The film is being sold by Cinema Management Group and financiers include RBF Productions, Silver Reel, Doha Film Institute, Polish Film Institute, Sevenex Capital Partners and City of Wrocław, European Capital of Culture in 2016.
Each of the film's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, using the same technique as Van Gogh, created by a team of 115 painters. The film premiered at the 2017 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
