The Tea Party has consistently used NASA as its whipping boy for an example of excessive government spending. Thankfully, more and more people are regarding the Tea Party as excessive government spending so hopefully we will not be hearing their short-sighted, unimaginative and repressive rubbish much longer.
NASA is one of the tiniest pieces of the Federal budget. Eliminating NASA won't put a chicken in your pot, it wouldn't even put a sparrow into it. That the Tea Party makes such a big deal of throttling NASA expenses doesn't show their perspicacity but rather their incompetence and unwillingness to deal with serious matters.
You need NASA. You don't need the Tea Party.

NASA gives us the vision which stays locked on the ground far too much. Humans always look beyond that ... except when the Tea Party shows up. In various forms, the Tea Party has always existed in the form of people too afraid to face the future, face each other, or face much of anything.
Space is scary and more people will die getting out there ... but mostly they won't and that's the risk astronauts are willing to take because they know what's out there ... and we can only dream of it ... unless we're Tea Party and don't dream at all.
What NASA brings back isn't even the most important thing as what they give us is they will take us with them and there is no other way to do it ... unless you fly too. Maybe you will. I hope you do and don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do something. You know what you shouldn't be doing; as to anything else, fuckin' do it.
