Zappa Plays Zappa

Dweezil Zappa uses that name for touring and he's in Europe now with upcoming dates in Italy, Austria, and Germany.  The reference is not the tour schedule but rather background on the band.  (WIKI:  Zappa Plays Zappa)

The purpose of the article is instigation and I'm ever so pleased to tell you I have done a peach of a job of instigation already and various cogs are turning which in turn move other cogs.

Many of the same people from Frank Zappa's last band tour with Zappa Plays Zappa and this has been happening for years.  Dweezil Zappa has been doing this for quite a while and the best of the best come to perform with him.  For any hard-core Zappa fan, you don't really have to go all that far to find the joy and the light and the yellow snow again ... well, at least not if you're in Europe just now.

Most of the time we don't see much left of music except endless parades of soloists but Zappa keeps pushing out to new worlds.  Whether he can be more than his father doesn't even mean anything when both are out on such an extreme of musicianship and creativity.  With Zappa, it's more like with Chick Corea's bands since everyone in them will be a virtuoso musician rather than just one star who grandstands endlessly.

It's unknown if the band does better in Europe or America but my guess would be Europe because a America is a lot stuck and his highly-constipated just now.  Euros aren't just accepting of jazz and progressive but rather they revel in it and I don't see much of that in America.  That thinking is based on the things I see posted to Facebook but that's from people with whom I'm associated, albeit loosely, and the sample size is relatively small.  The Euros invariably post more advanced music.

One major exception is Option Y in Rhode Island as that crew is way, way out there and they're dayum good at it.  Contact them through Facebook to arrange an RL gig at your venue.

(Ed: did you seriously just mention Option Y in the same context as Zappa?)

Yep, sure did.  Deal with it (larfs).
