Fifteen Bucks for 250 MB Data Plan from AT&T

We owe no favors to AT&T but they served well for remote access for the iPad years ago and could again.  The question is whether it's worth the money.  It might not be much to you but here it counts.

The Maps function on the iPad is excellent.  Getting lost in Fort Worth is bad, as happened yesterday and which FUBARed the VA expedition, but getting lost in Dallas means you will probably never be seen again.  Yevette doesn't know it over there much better than I so ... if we get lost, we would end up eaten by Mormons in the desert or something.

There doesn't seem to be a direct route to anywhere and both cities are prime examples of Mafia highway engineering as the roads are everywhere ... but they don't go anywhere.  This is not simple cynicism; if you ever drive around these cities ... well ... you probably won't ever be seen again either.

Maybe preventing that is worth fifteen bucks a month for the rest of my life.  Maybe.

You can use it for killing time when there's no WiFi in the waiting room and the only magazines are "Sports Illustrated" or "Field and Stream" because the obvious primary choices of men are bouncing balls and shooting things.

The time killing aspect isn't worth fifteen bucks a month.  Your dumb ass should have loaded up some stupid games before going and spending that money for life for social networks is not going to happen.  Much better off with a book and they are dearly missed.

Remote Skype has value although I question how well it will do remotely, as opposed to via WiFi which is faster.  No chance it could push video but text chat would probably work.  The question is whether it could handle voice.  If this works then the iPad becomes a carphone for fifteen bucks a month.  Definitely seeing some value there.

Yah, I know there's 5G out there but this iPad knows 3G.  As I say, it's slower than WiFi, much slower.  If it were a question of 5G then there would be no need to ask it because then video may well be possible and that means a live remote in Fort Worth somewhere.  That would be a Must Have thing rather than a Maybe Thing.

The above is not fantasy and I know it works.  I took Cat on a TV date by using the iPad as the camera for a concert in the city square and there was a major party band out there.  We watched the concert together and could talk at the same time over Skype.  Sure it's geeky as a mofo but it permitted me to take my date to a concert when she wasn't even in the same country.  Call it geeky if you like but I'm calling that one romance as in by whatever measure to hold your hand.

(Ed:  I like it better when you act like an asshole)

Yah, I know.  We can't do human sacrifices every single time, tho.  Just now there's no blood left in any of the candidates but Sanders so there's no sport in it.

Value ... hmmm ...

(Ed: you whining about money?)

Nope.  If you don't consider things at this length when you spend, um, why not (larfs).

Looks like it shakes down to don't do it.  Yesterday I was frying over getting to Dallas but that was a drag that doesn't matter anymore.  It's re-scheduled for next week but later in the day.

None of this is to slash iPads gratuitously.  These are only my applications for one.  A dashboard-mounted iPad with 3G, xG, or whatever remote access is incredibly useful.  There's no serious plan for road trips so scratch that one.

Yep, so, there you go.  Bag it.  This could come up again if any useful application comes to mind but it's not immediately revealing itself.
