Facebook claims real people who are friends but hardly ever are whereas you all don't claim to be anything and are almost always real.
Therefore, be ever aware of the claims of clods for they are not likely to be real.
(Ed: what possible use is advice like that??)
It's not for you, matey mate, as you already get it but I'm one with the dodgy list of representatives of genus Solanum (i.e. potatoes) in my friends list. Then it gets worrisome on deleting them as maybe they leap from the nether darkness, flying about and screeching, I thought we were friends. My only response is, well, I thought you were dead after I didn't hear anything for a year. Who knew you were Tom Hanks.
Yah, it would be childish even in high school but so it goes in the online world and it further increases my interest in movies although not anything in the National Lampoon vacation series.
Mostly the people have been Pledged into dimwitted obedience / somnolence and have become less interesting than the average potato.
Maybe you think that elevates and / or anthropomorphizes potatoes but I got interested in them and started looking around. At first I discovered there are one thousand species of potatoes in the world and that had a nice bit of gee whiz to it but then I discovered those one thousand species are spread out into five thousand varieties. Right off the top we see there's considerably more variety to potatoes than to social network people so we have a reason to continue. (WIKI: Potato)
This started because of a picture of highly-diverse varieties of potatoes and that was somewhat interesting for the weirdness but it also included the fact potatoes are native to Peru. That got the curiosity going about how they got to the Old World in time for the Irish to become dependent on them as a food source and then see it collapse with the Potato Famine.
Maybe you recall "The Potato Eaters" from van Gogh as one of his finest works and he painted that around 1880 so potatoes spread hella fast once they got to the Old World. It's one of the most important paintings I have ever seen and I did have that privilege once.
"The Potato Eaters" is a much larger canvas than other pieces I had seen previously from Vincent. He gave us plenty of freedom to stand back to behold it and I did for some while. File that one under the Finest Luxuries Are Free.
The nobility in wretchedness is distant to many in these times of spiritual impoverishment but that treatise will keep for another time. The painting is an all-time personal favorite in understated excellence.
Apparently potatoes really did spread from Peru, tho, as the Spanish must have taken potatoes back to the Old World after their invasion and they spread around the planet from there to become one of the world's most important staple foods.
That potatoes are so important for human survival was part of it since it seemed a good thing to learn a bit about something we need so much and it turned out the lowly spud has more charms than may be apparent.
How about these beauties and it only shows half a dozen or so varieties.
Something kind of obscure but interesting to me anyway is the chaotic genetics of these potatoes since polyploidy (i.e. multiple sets of chromosomes) is common. Usually we don't see that as there may be mutations or whatever but not a complete copy of the genetic material which usually kills the organism or leaves it seriously degraded.
Polyploidy could be induced with colchicine, a poisonous chemical, in the ganja but there were advisories of don't do it because mostly the result is poisonous. However, with potatoes we see polyploidy frequently. We're not genetics sciencers, by any means, but we do see the weird of that.
People go on and on in outrage about GMO food but humans apparently have been screwing with the genome for potatoes for three or four centuries. Of course, if Monsanto had done it, only one variety of potato would remain and it would be (cough) poisonous. Maestro, rim shot, please.
(Ed: thanks for that gratuitous editorial)
You're welcome.
There's some more unusual as maybe you think potatoes are mostly a Western foodstuff because, well, meat and potatoes. We see for this aspect China is growing a third of the potatoes in the world with India not far behind. So, guess again, Confucius, it's not only about rice anymore.
Maybe the interested student wants to pursue it and I may read some more. I knew peeling an onion always reveals more layers but who knew that's also true for the lowly spud.
So, now do you want to hear about people online?
(Ed: NO!)
I rest my case. Potatoes are more interesting than people.
Therefore, be ever aware of the claims of clods for they are not likely to be real.
