The only unilateral solution that ever worked was the Great Flood. It was perfectly chosen for purpose and worked precisely according to design. Many others have tried unilateral solutions of their own in the interim but all have had one thing in common: they didn't work.
The most extreme example was the Third Reich but there are many others. No matter how brutal or vicious they may be, eventually they fail.
There's the premise the US will be invaded by someone but you really need some credible view of why anyone would do that. People come up from Central America to get jobs illegally but practically everyone else is invited. Mostly people just want to stay where they are. Home is what I believe most call it. There's no huge plan to invade anywhere as most people don't even want to move to the other side of town, much less the other side of the world.
So they bombed the shit out of Vietnam ... and it ended up doing exactly what it was going to do anyway.
Then they bombed the shit out Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and got a three-fer deal on installed-democracies that failed as all of them are in chaos now.
There are countless examples of this idiocy and all have the same theme: they don't work.
The inevitable question is why do they keep doing it and the only thing that shakes out of it is they make money on it. There is no threat. They manufactured one so they could make the weapons to rise to it. Did you ever see a nuclear submarine do anything? Anything at all?
Oh, it chucked a few cruise missiles? Well, gee, that's an impressive value at a billion dollars a copy, isn't it. They've been building them up in Groton, Connecticut, for all the time I've been alive. I've never seen one do anything substantial except demos for penguin admirals. Not once.
