The toll from the nightclub fire is up to twenty-four now in Oakland and, horrifying as that has become, it's not as bad as some nightclub fires elsewhere. Fortunately, not so many cities know such horrors but, regrettably for me, I've lived in two of them and was there for both.
There was the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in 1977 in Southgate, KY, which is a city so close to Cincinnati that it might as well be part of the main city. One hundred and sixty five people died in that one. (WIKI: Beverly Hills Supper Club fire)
The next one was in Providence, RI, where The Station burned in 2003 and a hundred people died. (WIKI: The Station nightclub fire)
It's no consolation in Oakland to hear a small number of other cities have felt that pain as well and it's also no consolation that not so many died in Oakland but maybe it helps that some do know how it goes for Oakland just now since such things gut the entire city when they come.
There's nothing we can do for Oakland since 'sending prayers' is just to make me feel like I did something when I know I didn't. I've just reviewed GoFundMe to discover whether a fund exists to help out survivors of the fire but I did not find one. However, I did find one for Cambridge which suffered a devastating fire in the same time period and has already raised over $122K.
So, chill'uns, what's the difference between Oakland and Cambridge.
I'm not going to write the editorial. This is just really bad.

These fires sound terrible. I remember the Beverly Hills club fire, I had just gone to the club a year or so before the big fire. It was a great place, I escorted some girl from UC to an event and met some incredible old geezers there. We sat and drank all night with some musicians who had actually played with Benny Goodman's swing band. They had the best stories, unfortunately I partied enough to forget most of them, but they were good, haha. Sad the place ended so tragically.
Cal Collins might have been one of them as he played in Cincinnati and I'm not sure who went each time but there was a bar called Sublette's on Central Parkway which used part of the abandoned subway and it was cooler than cool. Collins played regular gigs there and we saw him multiple times.
The owner of the place in Oakland screwed his pooch into sawdust as he went onto Facebook and was whining about his losses and, gee, thank God my kids are safe. People have been shooting flaming arrows that selfish son of a bitch all day.
Yeah, I remember Sublette's. It was like a wine cellar, very musty and dank, but very cool and had great live jazz. We did hang out there a bit with the vino flowing. Good memories!
Hopefully you remember Cal Collins from down there and that was one of the few places where drinking was at all enjoyable with that Baco Noir wine. It was one of the coolest places I ever went.
