What Would Alex S. Fraser Say About Resurrecting Ancient Species

Alex S. Fraser, my ol' Dad, was arguably one of the best geneticists of the previous generation and he was recognized for it.  (WIKI:  Alex Fraser (scientist))

Ed:  you wrote half of that!

The key point is I did not write the rest of it and they saw no need for corrections to that which I had already written beyond embellishing it with more detail.

That doesn't make me any kind of a geneticist but it did allow me to be privy to his perspectives on things.

-  He had as much enmity toward Edward Teller, one of the foremost advocates of the atomic bomb and using it, as any liberal can manage.

-  His work in genetics was in parallel with American aboveground nuclear testing and he saw the experimentation which took place at the time to determine the effects of exposure to radiation.  He knew the dangers and he was strongly opposed.

Note:  maybe some of the sibs remember in the scrapbooks a rat whose skin was hugely wrinkled from head to foot and it was bald after exposure to radiation.

-  He was alive during the time of the "Jurassic Park" movies but that's a situation in which I should rather hit my head with a brick for failing to talk about the philosophical aspects of doing such a thing.

I know he was charmed by Jurassic Park just as were we all but I cannot say authoritatively whether he would have endorsed doing it.

However, based on the known facts, it's my inference he would not have supported trying to do any kind of genetics stunts to resurrect ancient animals.  (Ithaka:  Making New Species for Fun and for Divinity - Science)
