Y'all have just about pushed Ithaka over 980K today and it's been slouching a tad in concert with my slouching but it's still turning over about 25K readers per month. Seeing it pop a million looks like it's realistic for me.
Note: it's pointless to try to discover the identity of the readers since it won't work although it can be amusing to try to figure out. Do understand there's really nothing productive in that but have a ball either way.
The turnover goes like this:
Step 1: The Raven has a Google account already or I would not have been able to turn over other of my blogs to him. Ithaka seemed to particularly appeal to him so tallyho.
The reason for mentioning something which already exists is it may be desirable to change your G+ account name since it goes all through Blogger. When an article is written, that name will be used. I don't use it but the Profile which Blogger will present will use that name as well. It's important to consider since long back I changed my account name to PeasInOurThyme to complete one of the dumbest moves I ever made with it.
Step 2: I will connect that existing name or a new one to Ithaka as an admin and that will make you the God of Ithaka with unlimited Blogger powers. Letting that feeling of omnipotence get to your head isn't such a great plan when Blogger doesn't have that many powers although some it may deliver better than anything else can and that's why I have continued using it all these years.
Step 3: establish a Twitter account if you don't have one now. Currently any article information is transmitted to Twitter by dlvr.it from where it will be transmitted to Facebook. However, that's not the only way to do it since dlvr.it can deliver the update to any social networks you like and could go directly to Facebook plus some unnamed other(s). However, consider carefully abandoning Twitter since the potential audience on Twitter is vastly higher on Twitter than on Facebook because the former is wide open.
Step 4: understand the linkage between Blogger and Twitter and Facebook with dlvr.it as the transmitter. One of the key parts is dlvr.it and it's important since I'm paying them ten dollars per month for unlimited posting. Without that, it will stop transmitting any time more than nine or ten articles are written within any twenty-four hour period. One of my tasks is to turn off the automatic deduction from my bank but it's not likely it will be necessary to accommodate posting at the speed I have typically done it
Step 5: write multiple articles ... and then throw them away. Blogger is a clunky beast and learning its picayunish ways comes best by doing ... but not at first releasing. When you're comfortable with dealing with Blogger such that it presents your article in the way you want, formatting it as you wish, and it's ready to greet the world then let it rip. The new God of Ithaka will then sally forth to pursue another million reads.
Here's an example since Blogger does not use #hashtags since those come from Twitter. The reason for using #hashtags is not immediately evident but one example the way they work has been with #Science articles I've written since the Regulars know what that means because they have seen it in use. In the larger sense, any keyword will make searching easier in any environment.
The first step for me is to wait for your Step 1 so I know your Google account. With that in-hand, I will complete the steps needed on my end so you can try playing with editing articles while I'm still around to answer any questions you may have.
The more I have considered the idea, the more I like it. Humans can't be immortal but Ithaka can just as is "Ithaca" from Constantine Cavafy since he's gone but the theme from his poem is not.
Writing any rules or directives for articles from Ithaka is not helpful to anyone since humans aren't immortal but we also loathe following rules, particularly when they came from someone else. The rules we make for ourselves are almost always important to follow so long as those weren't imposed from elsewhere.
As a writer, I believe it's vital to the guild to turn Ithaka over to you without any constraints since you can see from the existing articles I won't accept constraints from anywhere and it would not only be unethical but hypocritical for me to try to put any constraints on you.
One thing I recommend strongly is you avoid commercializing Ithaka since it's an easy thing to do. However, the fact I don't take money for it gives an extra level of authenticity which is impossible any other way. This is not a rule but a suggestion since I would likely have made some serious jingle jack from commercializing it. Google AdSense is the way to do that and it's implemented in the Blogger setup so that's one more thing to learn ... or ignore it and leave Ithaka to run as it has.
Note: it's been my pride and remains so in the fact I don't take money for doing this but choices are your own and, of course, my best wishes with how they work out for you.
Yep, I feel highly damn good about this and that's grand. There will be more on the topic as we work out how to do it.
