"Hurt" - Pol Arida - Uncover of NIN (video)

At the Rockhouse, an uncover is covering a song but not like it was originally written and this is what Pol Arida has done with "Hurt," originally by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

"Hurt" is a song for an old man or a young man on smack which is the same thing.  For many, we focus only on the damage we have done even when we have done good things because the good things become invisible from the pain, that which you caused and that which you felt because of it.

This is a gut-ripping song and Johnny Cash covered it in the way only an old addict can know.  That version is the one likely most familiar to people ... and the version Pol Arida has done is completely different.

Note:  we will not present the Johnny Cash version here because this is not a taste test.

When you're ready to experiment, hit it ...

As you have now seen, his imagery is the precise vision Pol Arida always brings.  He brings thirty years of video experience so do expect he will be good.  His technique in play and in singing is different in many ways from the original and this is the jazz of uncovers; take it wherever you like, just make it work.

Whether Arida's singing and phrasing tell the story is for you to consider and not for me to suggest.  The song is about a heroin junkie and we have no idea of Arida's history but we hope heroin was not in it.  Heroin is right now the biggest drug problem in America behind alcohol.  It's arguable Arida is singing for the immense disturbance in the Force from such a radical increase in the number of junkies and consequently the number of overdoses, this is the Hurt of an entire nation of junkies.  That's for you to consider as well and we do not have a suggestion as to its validity but it's a truth and we're sure Arida is aware of it.

So, for your consideration, the latest from Pol Arida.

Note:  Arida is used in the body of the article because that's the review tradition but the real Pol is a friend of mine in Edinburgh.
