When the Painting is More than the Colors - Michele Tragakiss #AbstractArt #ContemporaryArt

- by Michele Tragakiss@matraggi

Sometimes when you say you like a piece of art, the artist may say, "Man, you just like the colors."

The thing I hear in that statement is what do you see in the painting which makes you like it.  Ms Tragakiss understates the colors but she brings immense passion and power in her brush strokes and maybe some of that is with a palette knife which, I believe, is for when you want to get really brutal because, man, it needs it.

There's Pointillism on one end of the scale and this on the other with the first impression from it of immediacy; it's a highly demonstrative piece and perhaps that's someone's eye looking out at us, possibly with her head bowed a little bit.

I don't know if she's a woman but it seems likely when the rest of her face is shrouded by something we don't know.  There are some more or less cross-hatched strokes in front of where her mouth would be so does this represent a muzzle for an extremely subjugated woman.

The greenness below would usually indicate calmness and tranquility but it's seething.  There's a darkness behind her so perhaps she is pursued.  Does the light above shine down on her even though she may not feel it is for her.

There's deep turmoil and it's for us to discover why it should be that way.
