Ithaka with Science in Measured Doses

The vocabulary required for the science articles can be intimidating and I'm aware of it but there isn't much to be done about it without seeming patronizing and that's not at all the purpose.  If I explain everything then it assumes no-one among the readers knows it and then unfairness goes the other way.  There isn't such a good answer so the science comes out in measured releases and all of it must have some immediate application rather than pure materials science in which we really don't know what will come of it because the research is so esoteric.

My purpose is to express rather than impress and I want the best word for the duty.  If I present a definition for any less-common words then it assumes I'm the only one who knows and I'm the Lord of the Dictionary.  In reality, I have a tab open to a dictionary / thesaurus at all times and I constantly validate words for correctness.

Perhaps it's contrary to have such a strong interest in correct use of the language when so many do not but so it goes.

Conversely, for those with a more comprehensive vocabulary, it may be alienating when I'm using a stoner vernacular but, wtf, I am an old wastrel stoner with no future and no prospects and ain't that a weeper for the ages.  The question of vocabulary came up offline since use of such language isn't engaging for everyone and that defies Socialism in some ultra vague sense.

This isn't rambling from out of a vacuum since the question came and then it needs review whether Ithaka needs to respond but I don't believe it should.  I've been kind of torqued sometimes with a bad attitude in saying if you can't keep up then you're in the wrong parade and that kind of prickish behavior definitely needs to be remedied.

Meanwhile, some fellow within about the last thirty minutes was trying to throw down something about Communism and then immediately veered to Sharia Law.  That's when I throw up my hands to WTF are they putting in their food that scatters them like this.

Ed:  but that doesn't come here.

Precisely.  Ithaka has nothing to do with that so a response to that behavior in this forum makes no sense since you do not or I assume you do not do that.

The general editorial tone has hopefully been visible in its evolution toward an entirely non-combat engagement with anyone.  In part that's a response to that which I see elsewhere which is combative in just about any context and there's so much of it.

You're welcome to comment and I'm interested.  Maybe the comment is I come across as a pompous arrogant fuckhead and I won't throw that out but there isn't much I can do with it except take it under advisement.  If you have the goods on something you regard as pompous then we have some room to negotiate.

For me the vibe is like Mozart when King Frederick hassled him for his opera because it has 'too many notes' and Mozart said it has just the right number of notes, neither too many nor too few.  I'm hardly writing arias for classical operas but still his point sets a standard.  There should neither be too many nor too few words.

Fire as you will and I won't moderate anything out of it unless it's simple spam.
