In the article about "Gunboy" - The Almost Men's Magazine for Gloriously Glamorous Gunners, there is an image of a woman in a sexy pose and the caption she is Gunboy's transgender fold-out for the month.
This was not a shot at transgender and here's why:
- the picture is of a woman. We have no idea if she was that way at birth or got that way by surgery and it's not important to the point except insofar as you don't know one way or the other.
- there is zero commentary as to whether she is or she is not because, as above, it's not relevant.
- the NRA and the gunners carry bigotry to a great many things and the reference to transgender is to focus on that. There may be less clarity in Europe but here it would astonish anyone if the NRA featured a transgender woman for anything except as a target on a firing range. There isn't anything more right-wing than the NRA unless you simply shoot anyone who comes near you, regardless of why they come.
The reference was specifically to illustrate NRA bigotry and that's why a hot picture of a black woman would not work because they probably wouldn't do it but they might. However, there isn't any chance they would feature a transgender woman and likely most in America would know that. This puts a cultural bias into the writing in that the perception will be different (and I know that it was) in Europe.
There's some potential the NRA would try to exploit Caitlyn Jenner as she has said she's right wing. That's remote but it's possible. As to featuring a different transgender woman, I wouldn't bet a dime they would do it.
In this context, the cultural bias is inevitable as the problem with the NRA is uniquely American. There are lunatics all over the place who run about out of control with guns but here it's not just a right but a patriotic duty to do it. That creates a fundamental difference between America and places which have not let guns get out of control and perception of it from outside is difficult, particularly given how it has escalated so much in recent years.
Note: I do not have a gun. Even if I had the money, I would not buy one.
So, I do not accept the bust but I listened to it. If the article makes NRA people shoot flames out of their ears, that's alright ... but it's not alright if there is the same effect with transgender people. If that is the case, then please do let me know.
In a line: I referred the woman as transgender specifically because the NRA would never feature her.
