"I'm Going to Texas to Further My Education" - Science

While those words have never been uttered in all human history, there is actually science which sometimes comes from the state where most would last expect it.

Perena Gouma has invented a hand-held breath monitoring device which can detect the presence of flu virus.  (Science Daily:  Flu fighter: Breath monitor to detect flu)

Note:  Arlington is only a few miles from here.

Flu is one of the biggest Rockhouse fears after spiders and lying politicians so any new science elicits high interest here if it will serve to make it easier to identify any part of the mechanism by which flu spreads.

Perena Gouma, a professor in the UTA Materials Science and Engineering Department, has published an article in an academic journal that describes her invention of a hand-held breath monitor that can detect the flu virus.

The article, published in January 2017, explains in-depth how the single-exhale sensing device works and the research involved in its creation, which was funded by the National Science Foundation through the Smart Connected Health program. Gouma's device is similar to the breathalyzers used by police officers when they suspect a driver of being under the influence of alcohol. A patient simply exhales into the device, which uses semiconductor sensors like those in a household carbon monoxide detector.

Maybe a flu breathalyzer sounds awkward but it's sure not as awkward as being down for two weeks with 107F fever.

I keep hammering about flu because the last major epidemic was 1917-1918 and young people did not get a pass from it due to youth and health since a disproportionate number of them were whacked by it.  Influenza is incredibly dangerous and, when it really gets out of the corral, it gets lethal on a large scale.

As to whether Professor Gouma started her education in a Texas high school, there's little evidence of it and she's evidently a star in her field.  Stony Brook University:  Perena Gouma, Professor

Since you have deep OCD as well and must know ... form your idea of where you think she was educated ... if you guessed Greece then take a bow since she was born in Athens.  I did not try connecting with her but you can find her on Facebook.
