The Creation and Destruction of the Idea of Retirement

FDR brought the idea of retirement to Americans as the concept of a retirement system for an entire population didn't even exist before Social Security.  From that relatively humble beginning, Social Security grew to be the One Problem Which Matters to a large number of exceptionally unimaginative conservatives.  Retirement hasn't even existed for a full century yet in America and the GOP has been trying to destroy it the entire time.  You see what's left of American unions (i.e. almost nothing) and the GOP did that.

It doesn't faze conservatives to keep a stock of fifteen hundred nuclear weapons which cost an enormous amount to support and do not provide any value to anyone.  Moreover, development hasn't stopped as there is a long-running B61 bomb project which is specifically for nuclear weapons.  It could happen that protests will contest these costs but I've been listening for fifty years or so and I've never heard it.  Far from protesting, conservatives are designing an aircraft even more expensive than the B-2 and its purpose is long-range delivery of nuclear weapons but you might as well deliver the weapons on steam locomotives for all the chance they've got of being delivered anywhere.  This is a vast money-wasting charade from top to bottom and yet the GOP never protests a farthing of the cost.

It doesn't faze conservatives to spend a billion or so on each submarine and another billion or so on each aircraft carrier and keep these in continuous production, so long as they're always named after Republicans.  They even named one after George Bush the Former.  For what.  He never did much of anything except make a fool of himself with the 'Read My Lips' expression.

However, wind up those monkeys on Social Security and they will go on all day about how the poor are eating the heart and soul of the country.  All of them have some patent financial program which will work, oh, so much better than Social Security.  The fundamental flaw to that thinking is Social Security would be well-funded if Congress had not stolen the money and applied it to other budgets while blaming Social Security as the cause.

The callous heartlessness of this is spectacular, even for Washington where they specialize in it.

The worst of it isn't the criminals in Washington who commit the theft but rather it's the people with such a vapid state of mind that they don't investigate any of this and take the plan for eliminating Social Security as yet another holy cause in a country so lousy with causes that they run through the gutters like raw sewage, a good many of them being nothing more than simple and blisteringly-cynical fronts for scamming yet more money from the people.

It's not surprising people are so gelatinous as Trump and Bush are the top dogs for the GOP and they're second-rate rubbish, one hates Mexicans the other hates 'big words,' thus elevating to no end America's stature and prestige in the world.  These 'candidates' don't even know enough that we could use them as high school teachers and yet people seriously consider them to run the country.  The biggest embarrassment in America is that Americans are not embarrassed by people like Trump and Bush.

Add Carson to that roster as this article was prompted by his statements regarding Social Security and there's no point in repeating them as it's the same old Marginalize and Destroy approach the GOP has been trying with Social Security for years.  Thus far he's not even interesting enough to do something as embarrassing as Trump or Bush.  He was the only one who, based on some early comments, seemed he might differentiate himself but it turns out he's just the same as the others:  fish bait.
