Understanding America's Obesity - Science

When only one third of Americans are not fat or obese, defensive flak from Facebook about America bashing is just obfuscatory rubbish and exactly what we expect from that bloated medium.  That's likely one of the largest reasons for using social networks, that people have such disgusting appearance now they don't want to be seen.  (Science Daily:  How a Western diet leads to overeating and obesity)

Note:  if you want some crap monkey to stroke you or to say only what you want to hear, go to CNN where you can read about Russian hookers pissing on each other to amuse Donald Trump's fetishes as CNN glories in self-righteousness while they report this swill.  If water sports are your preference, take it to CNN as that won't play here.

There was a time when that kind of perversity was in the letters forums on "Penthouse," one of the most tasteless of the lad mags, but CNN has made it front page news.

New research by scientists at the University of California, Riverside now shows that chronic consumption of a western diet leads to overeating and obesity due to elevations in "peripheral endocannabinoid signaling."

The endocannabinoid system is located throughout the mammalian body, including the brain and all peripheral organs, and participates in the control of many physiological functions in the body, including food intake, energy balance, and reward.  It is comprised of lipid signaling molecules called endocannabinoids -- which can be thought of as the body's own "natural cannabis" -- that bind to cannabinoid receptors located on cells throughout the body.

So far that doesn't mean a whole lot except to indicate a significant biological response to the diet.  As you likely expect, there's a consequence.

They found that when compared to mice fed a standard low-fat/low-sugar diet, mice fed a western diet for 60 days rapidly gained body weight and became obese, and displayed "hyperphagia," that is, they consumed significantly more calories, and consumed significantly larger meals at a much higher rate of intake (calories per minute).

- SD

Now you have a new word for Americans:  hyperphagic.  You're welcome.

Ed:  are you really going to spin this to you've got to swing Mediterranean?

Actually, no.  It's obvious the Mediterranean diet is healthy so we assume you already know it.

The situation is much more insidious that and please do read on ...

"These hyperphagic responses to western diet were met with greatly elevated levels of endocannabinoids in the small intestine and circulation," DiPatrizio said.  "Importantly, we found that blocking the actions of the endocannabinoids with pharmacological inhibitors of cannabinoid receptors in the periphery completely normalized food intake and meal patterns in western diet-induced obese mice to levels found in control lean mice fed standard chow."

- SD

From that we take, you can continue eating a shitty diet but if you follow that with our endocannabinoid inhibitor then it probably won't make you sick / destroy your physique.

WTF kind of logic is that, mates?

It's only been a few days since there was a different release of research regarding those with a high meat intake as in seven days a week.  The consequence was a slowly obliterated colon but I didn't make a deal out of it since that seems patently obvious also.  It's important they confirm something we know intuitively but that didn't need trumpets, in my estimation.

Obesity while out of control in America because not what people eat but what they dont do.
Every country listed as a country by the United Nations has increased its percentage of obese countrymen.
As long as Americans sit on thier butts and eat like pigs they will be fat.
Using a singular to prove the rule,
I drink an obscene number of energy and soft drinks. I have a very western diet. I eat far over the 2000 recommended calories a day. But I also rarely stop moving from wake up to lay down.
If you burn more calories than you consume you wont get fat. It is a very simple system. I consumed almost 10000 calories a day when I was working out at the dojo. And only gained the weight that I wanted to set up in weight class.
No chemical or drugs needed just effort

My approach has used the same logic but it's never been difficult with me and it sounds like not with you either. It wasn't my purpose in the article to show people eat such food and become hyperphagic that makes it an illness and not a fault. It's just a bad idea and my concern is regarding proposal of a medical solution for dealing with the consequences when the actual one is to eat better or less.

One of Americas largest shortcomings is that they think there is a drug to fix everything. But in reality they probably need none of them if they just put in the effort to take care of themselves

That's what was disturbing in this one. We don't need a drug to help deal with a shitty diet. We need to unload the shitty diet.
