Pete Seeger sang of all the crackerbox houses in suburbia and how they're all made of ticky tacky. Here's the crackerbox where we lived in Davis, California, as it appeared some unknown years later when I made a brief visit.
How unbelievably bloody awful. My parents bought that house in 1962 and it must have been part of the post-WWII boom in prefab houses which made suburbia but you could punch a hole through a door with your fist since the components were unbelievably cheap and nasty. There was none of that horrible affectation with the bricks in the yard and it looks like they put some phony facade over the exterior as well.
No matter how much it bobs and weaves, it's still just a crackerbox house made of ticky tacky.

The house actually looks very nice. It is not a facade on the house. They actually remodeled it into a brick house. The entire neighborhood was full of those houses expanded and remodeled.
I havent been back in about 15 years anything within walking distance of UCD is worth the time and effort
If you research the property it is now 1700 sq ft and valued at over $500k far more than the $18k the parents paid for it
Amusing fact
The College Park house that they rented tje first year about $1.5M these days
That one was actually built fairly well but $1.5 mil ... wowzer! (larfs)
We don't agree on how it looks but that's ok. Half a mil for Chestnut Lane! It's kind of hard to grasp, isn't it.
The strongest memory from College Park is when I started plunking out the melody to the theme song for "Wagon Train" (seriously ... it seemed important at the time) and I was advised, in no uncertain terms, don't you ever touch that piano again.
(That's not about blaming but rather wistful regret)
It is not crazy. It is about 8% year over year appreciation for 50 years.

My tastes run much more toward less affectation and a well-planted garden which has some potential to naturalize is much more pleasing ... like your place, for example. Ha!
Did you notice that chimney?? It looks like they may have installed a fireplace.
