Perhaps you have already seen today an animation of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius which buried Pompeii and, in that case, we suspect you may not be interested but we were stunned by it.
Something which surprised me is it was much slower than I imagined. My previous conception was they got whacked so quickly they didn't have time to get out of the way but it actually took most of a day before the eruption got really got insane and then about five or six more hours to bury the city.
