Canon XA35 Pro Camcorder

The Canon XA35 is around the top of Canon's consumer cams and they have another range of ultra cams some the $15K - $20K range.  This model goes for about $2500 and this elicits major camera lust.

Note:  blame this one on Kannafoot as he was lusting after a Canon camera which goes for about $6000.  His specialty is SLR photography rather than video but he does find ways to spend enormous amounts of money on it.  I saw him lusting and got to wondering, well, just how much can you blow on Canon video.

One aspect of exceptional goodness of the Canon XA35 is the two XLR ports and they have phantom power for studio mikes.  The camera is more goodness all over with much larger glass, sensor, etc, etc.

One of them is cool, two of them is excellent, and three would be Nirvana in my own circumstance.  The other cameras here already can be used for high risk shots such as putting a camera in the light rack, etc.

(Ed:  you're talking $7500!)

Yes.

As I wrote previously, if I were shooting a professional video of any band whatsoever, I would want to use six of them with four static cameras on tripods and two roaming.

(Ed:  you are serious?)

Yes.

The next escalation beyond this is for video cameras specific to 4K resolution.  Going to that means twenty grand gone right off the top.  Call it ten grand for cameras and another ten grand for an Apple computer powerful enough to process that immense volume of video and render it.  So that's twenty grand before you even buy a copy of Final Cut.

There's no lust for that kit because we're sure the Retina display on Apple monitors is beautiful but 1080p is fully capable of delivering excellent quality even if viewed on a Retina display.

The question isn't whether it's worth that kind of money to film me but rather whether it's worth it to film anything.  Here at the Rockhouse, we don't believe it's worth it for shooting 4K video, in part because we already hear rumbling about 8K video so we see little value in buying into an expensive way station toward something else.

The Canon XA35 would not result in a radical increase in the volume of data recorded but it would definitely make that level of change in the quality of the images.

Note:  this is not a sales pitch.  Even though I cannot afford it, some who follow the blather here may be interested to see what I would do.  Of course, if you want to pitch up $2500 to the Donate box, that would be a peach also.  If you want to pitch up $7500 then I love you long time, G.I.

(Ed:  do you seriously think anyone will do that?)

If the quality of the videos is perceived as good enough, perhaps so.  The last one pushed the existing cameras to their limits and they do well enough except in extreme situations but I do extreme situations a lot.  To do better work, I need better kit.  It's not unusual for artists to have patrons but I'm not particularly good at finding them.

(Ed:  maybe you're not a particularly good artist?)

Well, thanks for that helpful ray of joy, huh (larfs).

As an example of what comes of it there's a video I shot of the Fort Worth Botanical Garden and it's not a music video, it's a talking walkaround.  That one has had hundreds and hundreds of hits.  My purpose is to capture any kind of experience and that's not limited to my music videos which are massively important to me but not the only important thing.
