CNN Does Everything it Can to Blame Mother for Oregon Shooting

The mother of the Oregon shooter, prior to the shooting, has shot off her mouth on gun rights and expressed extreme and illogical views.  She said proudly she had at least four weapons with full-magazines and the assault rifles were loaded with full clips at all times.

While this deranged thinking is not uncommon in the U.S., you still have no case to say she caused what happened and it's abhorrent to believe it.  On a radically different scale, it's similar to blaming Bush for 9/11.  Even though I loathe even the oxygen this guy breathes, that shot isn't fair ... just as it is not with this guy's mother.

Note:  there is no reason to save their names as they do not deserve recognition.

It's only been since yesterday that I last heard of a gun being needed for protection.  I reacted strongly but not angrily in saying 'guns are hardly ever used for protection and the majority of deaths from them are suicides.'

The above is true but still the belief prevails that protection is necessary and you see it with the mother of the killer in which she is so blind scared she's got guns in every room and all of them loaded to kill.

It's almost certainly true this warped the thinking of the shooter but that in no way accounts for why he says, 'today I am going to kill a lot of people.'  The idea assumes he has no will whatsoever and he would do mother's bidding like a trained animal.

Can you imagine the self-recrimination which must come to this woman now.  She has lost everything except the remaining guns and what do you suppose she will do with them if the badgering continues.  Her NRA fantasy about the value of weapons is in pieces of the ground and all that remains is she still has to get her boy buried.  You couldn't destroy this woman more effectively if you burned down her house.

No doubt she represents some of the worst people in the country but she didn't pull the trigger and trying to blame her for it or shame her for it only makes sense for selling newspapers (i.e. William Randolph Hearst and do understand what a slut he was about it).

While the woman doesn't represent anyone, she is symptomatic of an endemic fear in people which rationalizes her nutcase behavior.  Example:  she was proud of all the loaded magazines and that these weapons were ready to shoot.  She made it clear she wasn't following any of the standards for responsible gun ownership such as storing weapons unloaded, keeping them locked away, etc, etc.  For some paranoid reason, she believes it is necessary to keep these weapons available in this way at all times.

One of the favorite targets for inculcating this kind of behavior is the media as they endlessly prate about the dangers of ISIS, Russians, and invading space aliens.  The most bitter irony of it is the attention given to a shooter by the media invokes the fear liberals will try to take the guns and sales increase as if there's a special on weapons at Wal-Mart.  Check it for yourself:  gun sales actually rise after a mass shooting and this phenomenon has been seen multiple times.

At first the increased sales show a callous and uncaring population.  To some extent it is uncaring but more than that it shows the gut-ripping fear in them.  The guns are expensive as a quality weapon will be pushing to the price of a good guitar.  They don't do anything except sit in a wall rack and any time you take them down to shoot them, you have to clean them after.  Few things are that much of an expensive nuisance but such people have that need and you see how wildly they react if that need will be compromised.

The comment about suicide is not really relevant. If someone wants to do that they should be allowed I disagrre with the idea but they should be allowed.
Next a very quick stop gap is too eliminate large capacity clips. They are only allowed on practice and target shooting. During deer season a hunter can only have 3 straight walled shells in a rifle at a time
The high body counts of these fools would be reduced if they had to change clips every more often. Very few people are adept at quickly changing a clip leaving heroic saves far easier.
Go back to the previous laws against automatic and semiautomatic weapons
And sales go up because they think the laws will change and they want to get the weapon of choice before that happens.
As always one one person is responsible for any shooting

I'll stand by the suicide reference because many are not aware of the extent to which guns are used for suicide (i.e. over 10K in any given year). As to legal suicide, that has just passed in California to allow doctors to prescribe lethal amounts of some medication to terminally-ill patients.

Agreed on the large clips. If you popped off one round at a deer, he's either down or he's dashed. Rapid-fire isn't hunting anyway. Anyone who has done Basic Training has seen the lesson of firing on full-auto, that even the best can't hit anything that way.

I understand the basis for the sales and I do charge the media for a big part of exacerbating that.

Agreed. The kid pulled the trigger and he is accountable.

It is not our responsibilty to keep all methods of suicide out of the hands of those who would like to use them.
It is our responsibilty to provide them all the possible support to help them decide it is not the best possible action.

Agreed on both. Even if it were someone's purpose to outlaw all methods of suicide, it probably wouldn't even be possible. Some actress committed suicide in 1938 by eating ant paste (seriously). Who even knows anyone can do such a thing.

As to education, yes. I strongly believe it's the best cure for just about anything.
